What is 1,000 Books before Kindergarten?
Read a book – any book – to your child. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten.
I know… it sounds daunting, but it really isn’t. If you read just one book a night, you will have read 365 books in one year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around five years of age, you have more time than you think.
Studies have shown that reading with your child provides a great opportunity for bonding. Reading together is fun and will create life-long memories for the both of you.
To help you keep track of your progress to 1,000 books, Raymond Library has an activity journal for you. All you need to do is pledge to read your child 1,000 books before they begin kindergarten by signing up at the library. Upon signing up for the program, you will receive the activity journal and a sheet of some staff recommended reads, broken down by age group.
